How to Spot and Hire an Experienced Painter

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people out there who will pick up a paintbrush and call themselves a professional painter. Homeowners hire these amateurs and end up being disappointed in the results. To fix the mistakes made by these so-called “painters,” they are forced to hire real painters, therefore spending twice what they should have on a freshly painted room or home. Make sure this doesn’t happen to you and learn how to hire experienced painters near you! Here are some tips to use:

Ask About Their Process

Professional painting companies have a specific process that they adhere to. That process often includes prep (moving furniture to the center of the room, taping off trim, tarping furniture and floors and blocking off rooms), prime and double or triple coat. Of course, every project is different, but a good indication of whether you’re talking to a professional or amateur is their answer to your question. If they have an answer ready, they’re likely professionals. If they don’t seem to know what you’re talking about, they probably don’t know what they’re doing.

Review Their Estimate

Professional painting contractors will give you a detailed estimate of the work to be completed. If you ask to have a single room painted, a professional won’t merely put, “paint one room” as the line item and quote a price; rather, they will create a line item for each step of the process. They will quote a price for prep. They will include any extras, such as removing wallpaper or refinishing drywall. They will let you know whether the room will require one coat or three. Thoroughly review each estimate and pay particular attention to those with the most detail, as those are the people you want to give a call.

Know the Average Cost of Painting

Too often, contractors will quote ridiculous prices in the hopes that the homeowners don’t know the going rate for cabinet refinishing companies in the area. Sadly, a lot of people will accept the first quote they get because they really don’t know any better. It helps to know the average cost of painting in your area before you hire a contractor, which you can find out either by gathering several estimates and averaging them out or by doing a quick Google search. If one quote is much higher or lower than the others, throw it out and move on.

If you’re looking for experienced painters near you! use the tips above to make sure that you hire a true professional and not just someone who thought they could pick up a paintbrush and make a living.
