Troubleshooting an Air Conditioning Fail

by | Apr 15, 2013 | Heating and Air Conditioning

It?s the first hot day and your air conditioning unit fails to start; or day after day, the air just doesn?t feel as cool and comfortable as it once did. It can difficult to troubleshoot an air conditioning fail yourself, but if you check your system before you call in an air conditioning service in Los Angeles, you may be able to locate the problem.

Check the Thermostat

Oops! Sometimes your air conditioning “trouble” can be caused by something by simple human error. We?ve all done it: Felt too chilly, turned up the thermostat, and forgotten all about it. Set the thermostat temperature lower than the room temperature. Listen for the unit to engage.

Check the Registers

If air isn?t flowing from the registers, check the breaker associated with your air conditioning system. If the breaker is tripped, reset it by switching it off and then on again. If the breaker trips again, you may have a wiring problem. If the breaker is not tripped, you may have a problem with your thermostat or air handler control board, and it?s probably time to call an air conditioning service Los Angeles area.

Check the Outside Unit

If you can?t see a problem indoors, take a look at the outside unit. If the fan is running, but the blower motor is not, you may have an issue with your air handler?s control board or its run capacitor. If your outside unit has a reset button, give it push. If the unit fails to restart or fails to keep running, it?s probably time to call in an air conditioning Los Angeles area service.

Check for Ice

Locate the lines that connect the indoor and outdoor units of your air conditioning system. Do you see frost or ice? Turn the air conditioner off, and wait allow the ice to thaw. Restart the air conditioner and run it for about ten minutes; then go outside and find the copper line. It should have condensation on it and feel cold. If it does not, you your unit may be having trouble processing its Freon. Any issue with Freon is best left to an air conditioning service in Los Angeles.

Call in a Pro

Now that you?ve checked the system, you probably have a better idea from where the problem in your central air conditioning is originating. Consult with a professional and your system will soon be up and running.
